Madame is now the booker for The Correspondents in Portugal

the-correspondentsA few weeks back, Madame organized a party in Lisbon that was headlined by London-based Hip-Hop/Swing duo The Correspondents. The DJ/MC team went down a storm with party goers and since Madame knows great talent when she sees it, she immediately decided to sign on to be The Correspondents booker in Portugal. If the reaction from the first time they played in Lisbon is anything to go by, then the super talented duo will surely be returning to Portugal many times.

The chosen venue is the Islington Metal Works, behind Angel tube station and the lineup features two projects who have already made waves in the UK. First up is Oporto’s :papercutz, whose sublime blend of acoustic instruments and electronica has seen them release their debut album on Montreal’s Apegenine Recordings, win an award at London’s prestigious People’s Music Awards, gain praise from BBC presenter Anne Nightingale and XFM’s Eddy Temple-Morris, and receive an invitation to play at the biggest alternative music festival in the United States - SXSW.

Next up is one of Portugal’s hottest dance music projects, Octa Push, whose unique sunshine infused dubstep has seen them go down a storm at such venues as the legendary fabric, festivals like Sonar and Glade, among many others, and has earned them the respect of luminaries such as Thom Yorke and Buraka Som Sistema. The unstoppable duo will once again grace “O Baile” with their highly eclectic and energetic live act.

“O Baile” returns to London

teratronAfter a succesful Lisbon run, Friday the 2nd of April marks the return of “O Baile” to London, and Madame and Lumin have a very special evening planned. The lineup will consist of two major portuguese acts handpicked from among the finest Lisbon’s awesome underground scene has to offer.

First up will be Teratron, a new project whose debut album was considered the 3rd best album of the year by popular website cotonete, whose video shot to the top of the charts on MTV Portugal, and whose earth-shaking live act has been a massive success helping them secure warm up gigs for such international sensations as Steve Aoki. After a quick listen to their record, the girls behind “O Baile” couldn’t resist bringing them to London.

Following on from the new boys will be Portugal’s favourite female DJ duo, Heartbreakerz. The two girls have floored clubbers from Lisbon to Paris with their sensual, unique sound which is a deadly blend of techno, tech house and electro. Their flawless mixing skills and uncanny knack for knowing exactly what a crowd wants at any given time has seen them play at every big club and festival in Portugal, the infamous Always Fridays night at The Egg, La Bellevilloise in Paris and has even secured them a spot at this year’s Rock In Rio in Lisbon alongside Paul Ritch, Speedy J and Green Velvet.

As we enter a new decade, Madame and Lumin decided it was time for a change, and have now moved the “O Baile” events to the amazing Islington Metal Works in Angel. Built in the late 19th century this unbelievable venue has three floors and has hosted everything from concerts, to art exhibitions and a whole host of wild parties. So make sure to save the date cause this is one comeback you won’t want to miss.

Papercutz to play London “O Baile” in July

papercutz1Papercutz are a young band from Oporto in Portugal whose striking blend of acoustic and electronic sounds has seen them release their debut album on Montreal’s Apegenine Recordings, win an award at London’s prestigious People’s Music Awards, gain praise from BBC presenter Anne Nightingale and XFM’s Eddy Temple-Morris, and receive an invitation to play at the biggest alternative music festival in the United States - SXSW.

Since Madame and Lumin are always on the lookout for promising young talent, they immediately invited Papercutz to play at the July edition of “O Baile” which will go down at London’s Islington Metal Works, a venue that has hosted everything from concerts, to exhibitions, to Spike Lee’s private parties.

——————————————————————————————————————————————————–

O Baile website is now online!

picture-21O Baile“, the events hosted and promoted by Madame and Lumin, have seen a dramatic increase in hype and notoriety. Starting small at the beginning of last year at London venues such as Sketch or Bar Music Hall, and primarily aimed at showcasing the best music spawned from the portuguese underground, the word spread quickly that something special was brewing in some of the UK capital’s hippest nightspots. In November, the girls brought the party to Lisbon in a big way with a huge venue and stunning lineup. It was an unbridled success. In 2010, a resolution was made: “O Baile” would happen simultaneously in London and Lisbon. To celebrate this fact, Madame and Lumin decided to set up a website to help spread the word for their awesome parties. Starting today, you can keep up with all the latest news regarding future events, venues, lineups and competitions at www.obaile.co.uk. Check it out!

O Baile returns to London in 2010

teratronAfter making it’s Lisbon debut in November and with a second event in the same city in February, Madame and Lumin felt it was high time to bring “O Baile” back to it’s city of origin, London.

On Friday the 2nd of April, the girls will be bringing the party back to the UK with a new venue and two great names from the Portuguese underground – Heartbreakerz, Lisbon’s favourite female DJ duo, and Teratron a new dance floor destroying project featuring members of Portugal’s biggest hip hop crew Da Weasel.

The event will be held at The Islington Metal Works, accessed via a discreet entrance just behind Angel tube station it has played host to the hippest art exhibitions, concerts and even Spike Lee’s private parties.

Micachu & The Shapes to play at Lisbon’s first “Baile”

micachu2_lowOn Saturday, the 21st of November, The Loft in Lisbon will host an event that has been all the rage in London. “O Baile“, a club night that was born from the imaginations of Mariana Duarte Silva and Joana Seguro, is a monthly showcase for Portugal’s cutting edge underground music. As the english capital is one of the most multicultural cities on the planet, the evenings’ concept evolved to include musicians from all over the world. ” O Baile” has had some of the freshest young talent in their DJ booth including Octapush (who were subsequently invited to play at Fabric and at the Glade Festival), Bart Cruz, Gustavo Rodrigues, Bailarico Sofisticado, Twofold, and Quayola, among others.

In November, and coinciding with Madame’s birthday bash, “O Baile” will be heading over to Lisbon with a lineup that has to be seen to be believed. We joint forces with Berlin’s Little Big Agency to bring to London so of their most exciting up and coming artists. First up is Micachu & The Shapes an english band who have had the critics enraptured with their stunningly original pop cacophony - they have been credited with releasing the record of the year and being the future of Pop music. Next a young artist whose fans include the legendary Brian Eno, Herbie Hancock and Coldplay (whose latest record, “Viva La Vida”, he helped produce) - the young Jon Hopkins will be bringing his unique electronica stylings and awesome live act to Lisbon’s first “Baile”. Tim Exile, Warp Records latest goldenboy, will showcase his glitchy take on dance music in a live act that will surely add an excentric flavour to the proceedings.

AS if all this wasn’t enough, the night will be rounded off by DJ sets from renowned italian visual artist Quayola, and from Portugal’s hottest DJ duos - Stereo Addiction and Heartbreakerz who will be sharing the booth with Twofold, the latest signing to Madame Management’s roster. The site chosen to host this event, which promises to be the party of the year, is The Loft in Lisbon.
Make sure to save the date, as the night of the 21st of November will surely be an evening you won’t want to miss. More info coming soon.

Book your flight now and come and dance with us in Lisbon

London won´t let me go…

sdc101741

So the day has arrived - 22nd July 09 - for me to leave London and follow my heart to Lisbon.

This all comes from one day sitting on my sofa and having a moment of lucidity and certainty… “I am going to propose to my boyfriend”.

5 months later, and after sharing the plan with my “accomplices” and dear friends - who had to actually wear the t-shirt saying “Gustavo will you marry Mariana?” in front of 1000 people in a night club in London - I finally have to leave the city I now love, to go and meet, my love.

So, here I am sitting on the same sofa, 30 minutes before leaving my London house to take the Luton train. I am feeling relaxed, chatting to blue boy about my crazy decision to get married and to move back to Portugal- he complaining he moved to London because of me… so I do what everybody should do 30 min before leaving home to catch a flight, I double check if my passport is with me. It isn’t. It went together with all the boxes on a bus to Portugal that will eventually arrive there along with other 5 boxes with all my London life inside.

Oh wait… I have my identity card, who needs a passport? Well, if your ID is 1 month out of date, you really need a valid passport.

I don´t have any documents with me, I can´t travel, I panic.

Blue boy is delighted! He never wanted me to go… I start stressing, sweating and obviously do the first emergency call, the person who will always have the solution for every problem in this difficult world – the boyfriend.

“I packed my passport inside the boxes that went to Portugal, my ID is out of date, I can´t travel, I am going to die!”

“Calm down, call the Embassy, I am sure someone there can help, you know that girl´s friend of an old friend of your mother´s good friend.. someone will help”…

Ok, he is not helping me.. I have to do my second emergency call, Rosa.

“Rosa, I packed my passport inside the boxes that went to Portugal, my ID is out of date, I can´t travel, I am going to die.”

“OMG you’re soooo fucked. Let me try to call the Embassy”

She is not helping either, I call my 3rd friend  “Di, I packed my passport inside the boxes that went to Portugal, my ID is out of date, I can´t travel, I am going to die.”

“Well…you can always try, sometimes they don´t even check the date on the ID, it happened to me before, it’s not the end of the world, give it a try, run to the airport and try to do something there”

That sounds more reasonable.

I need a 4th opinion on this subject, I call Didi.

“Didi, I packed my passport inside the boxes that went to Portugal, my ID is out of date, I can´t travel, I am going to die.”

“ahahahahhaa that is so you, you´re fucked no one will never ever let you travel”.

Ok, I think about Diana, I go to the airport.

I say goodbye to blue boy who’s still looking at me and thinking, “Thank God! You’re not going anywhere, London doesn´t want you to go, you have to stay, I am sure in 5 hours you will be home again, don´t waste that money, just stay!”

I go.

On my way there I plan everything, I still doubt whether I should just play the stupid girl at the check-in desk “Oh really? My ID card is out of date? Oh my God, I didn´t know I am so sorry”, or if I go the honest route and explain what happened to someone that eventually will have a kind heart and will (God knows why) help me.

The vision of being arrested at the airport because of using a out of date ID card is killing me, all I can think of is how the hell will I explain that to my grandmother?!

Still sweating, I am now at the easyjet desk assistance queue.

My turn arrives, so I start …. “Sir, I have a problem, and you need to help me please, I don’t have my passport, my ID is out of date, I need to go on this flight, I am getting married tomorrow, my parents have been preparing everything for 1 year, the priest is waiting for me to do the matrimonial course and its starts tomorrow, my boyfriend had to get a new suit, I am moving after a long and happy 3 years in London, you don’t know how I feel, I am so stressed, I am having a heart attack, you really have to save my life, I can pay, I have my VISA card, I can …. “ I was prepared to start crying in a very convinced way, when I hear the phrase from heaven – “don’t worry”.

“Don´t worry? You mean don´t worry as in .. you can help me?

“yes”

“but how much yes? You mean I can travel without any document with me?

“you just have to show me your ID”

“but is out of date for God sake”

“just show it please”

“ok”

He types something on a computer and I can feel his warm smile, he is playing with me, he knows I am about to die of anxiety.

“here you go”
“here I go? What do you mean???”
“you can go, I signed this form for you, Bonne Voyage”.

Sometimes, you have to give people a helping hand... I am here to sing praises to an airline company who did that to me. I am an easyjet girl, the type of person who will always check 4 times with TAP, BA and easyjet before I book my flight, just to make sure I am paying less, but still the 200 times I flew to Portugal, I flew easyjet.

I am also the kind of person who will always complain flying on a low-cost and having to wait 45 min on the B side of the queue (seeing all the Speedy boarding people passing in front of me, and thinking how can they pay extra 11 pounds to fly speedy when the idea of flying low-cost is to fly…at a lower cost..), I will also complain to pay 10 pounds for a not so hot in-flight panini, and always laugh when the Portuguese woman says “bem vindos a bordo da eaguizet” .

Always.

But having one easyjet man saving your life and signing a paper that says “Ms. Silva can fly home today, she as an ID that is just a matter of days out of date” can change the world and in one instant make it a better place…

Secret Wars is coming to Lisbon

poster-swars-low2

Secret Wars is a project that was born in London, it’s popularity spreading almost instantly throughout the U.K, making it’s way through Europe and the US (Secret Wars is hitting New York this week) and now it is ready to infect the rest of the world! Lisbon will be the next european city to host one of these unique events.

The concept is simple; a battle between street artists where everyone has access to the same weaponry. In Lisbon, we will see three London artists facing off against three Lisbon counterparts. The following rules apply to all Secret Wars:

90 Minutes, Black marker pens on white canvas, no sketches, no brushes

The winners are decided using a three point system: A vote by 2 guest judges and a crowd vote using a decibel reader.

Between the 7th and the 10th of July, besides the battle between London and Lisbon, the portuguese capital will also host the first residency solely dedicated to graffiti in the country’s history. For one week, three taggers from London and three from Lisbon, will prepare an exhibition that will open on the day of the Secret Wars battle. The goal of this residency is for the artists to create free of any constraints and to promote collaboration, which can only enrich the work of the participants as they interact with each other exchanging the quirks and experiences of their individual cultural experiences.

Lisbon will be represented by Hium, Klit and Mar. The London crew will be headed up by Jimi Crayon , Alfa and Teck1.

Be sure not to miss this groundbreaking event for fans of any kind of visual art.

tetine_tropical_punk2

For those of you have not encountered the beauty of Tetine here’s a taster: formed in 1995, São Paulo, Brazil by artists Eliete Mejorado and Bruno Verner; infusing contemporary Brazilian radicalism - pushing the boundaries of a hybrid vocabulary - Tetine have created a multitude of music & performance works ranging from spoken word through to electronica; including ritualistic performances, films and video.

“We have been defining Tetine’s work as being informed by an urgent necessity to translate our  life events into personal images, sonic textures, atmospheres and states through the use of body performance, electronic devices, voice recordings and projections. We have run Tetine as a duo since 1995. We have produced a variety of distinct original combined-media projects ranging from visual spoken-word performances; electronic music shows to video-installations and experimental albums”- Bruno Verner & Eliete Mejorado.

“The gleeful merging of 80’s synths, baile funk beats and Bruno Verner’s non-singing voice allow them to push over an hour mark” UNCUT 4/5

“Tetine calls the resulting aesthetic ‘tropical punk’ , a title they used to brand a show of radical Brazilian contemporary art …” XLR8R

“Kinder than their full-on live shows it pulls you in and holds you with its ever changing flow and colour, never boring, always inventive”. MUSIC WEEK
